Hey guys! I wanted to talk to you about covering events on your own. When I started at my internship I was really nervous to do event coverage. I wish that someone had given me a little more guidance on where to start. As a disclaimer I am not a professional, so this is just my process, everyone is different but I wanted to give you some tips that I’ve learned along the way!
Tip 1:
Before going to the event I do my research on what is going to be happening so it’s easy to figure out what I want my angle to be for my story. This makes the day of the event run smoother for me.
Tip 2:
I make a plan for what I am going to do to get the most information I can at the event. When I’m planning I like to write down a summary of the event, questions I will be asking the people I interview and the types of pictures I want to take. By doing this I am able to go in confidently on the day of knowing that I will able to get everything I need.
Tip 3:
On the day of the event I always make sure to have my phone and laptop fully charged. I know this may seem obvious but it is always good to have everything at 100% so you don’t miss any important moments.
Tip 4:
I like to use voice memos on my when I am conducting interviews. I use to try and write everything down that people were saying to me. This would slow me down and cause a lot of awkward pauses in my interviews. I also like to label each recording with the person’s name and the event title to make it easier to find later.
Tip 5:
When taking pictures write the people name down in the notes section of your phone. This makes it easy to I.D. the pictures when using them later.
I hope these tips helped for when you are covering future events! Next time I will be talking about goal setting in your internship! Stay tuned.
